Raffaella & Huricane secure pole position on day one in Lanaken
A total of 191 seven-year-old horses entered the arena for the 2024 FEI WBFSH Jumping World Breeding Championship in Lanaken, Belgium, last week. Among them, Bertram Allen showcased two exceptional young horses from Ballywalter Stables: the black BWP mare Raffaella (Kaiser van het Lambroeck / Eros Platiere, bred by Marie Bernaerts) and the grey SF stallion Huricane de Champloue (Windows Vh Costersveld / Diamant de Semilly, bred by Jean-Marie Charlot).

Bertram expertly guided both horses through the 1m40 two-phase class in the first qualifier, where Italian rider Guido Franchi set the fastest time aboard Mistique (Aganix du Seigneur). Bertram finished just 0.05 seconds behind to secure second place with Raffaella. Hot on Raffaella’s heels, Huricane de Champloue finished third, only 0.01 seconds behind his stablemate.
Unfortunately, a few poles down in the second qualifier prevented them from advancing to Sunday’s final, where fellow Irishman Michael Pender claimed victory on HHS Mercedes. Belgium’s Mathieu Bourdeaud’Hui took second place on Remco van den Uilenbos, while Michael Duffy (IRE) finished third aboard BP Royalty.
