What do you love the most about working with horses?
How all horses are so different, working with them gives me a chance to get to know each of their personalities and learn what they need from us to be able to do their best for the riders. I love how no day is the same with horses as they have lots of different moods just like us. Some days they test you but more often than not they remind me why I love my job.
Do you have a favourite among the horses and why?
Calvin (Go To Fortuna) - he acts really tough but is actually a huge softy with a lot of character.
If you didn't work with horses, what else would you do?
I would be a pre school teacher.
Describe a perfect morning in the stable!
Nice weather is my priority, then we can turn all the horses out straight away. It’s nice to see them have a buck and play beside their friends before they have to do some work. Then once we get the stables done; a coffee is the next best part of a perfect morning.
How long have you been working here?
2 years
What's the best time of the day in the stable?
Mid morning when everyone is busy and most of the horses are being exercised. Everyone is busy doing their bit and it’s the when we are really working as team. Coordinating taking horses off the walker, in from the fields, tacking up, washing off, riding and everything that goes with it. Once the morning runs smoothly it sets the tone for the rest if the day.
What’s your favorite memory from your time here?
We had a great show in Lier November last year, Harry winning the Grand Prix with Bertram in 2nd place was special, especially as Bertram had won the 7 year old final with Harry in 2nd the class before.
Who's the best character in the stable?
Richard, he keeps me laughing.
Who has the worst dress sense in the stable?
We all have our days...
Describe your favourite evening?
Quiet night in with good food or night out with good drinks, depends on what form I’m in.
If you were to have one horse more here in Ballywalter Farms from anywhere in the world, which one would it be?
My miniature pony Seamus who’s at my home in Ireland
What can you not live without?
Chocolate
Pick four people you’d like like to have dinner with, dead or alive!
Freddie Mercury, Billy Connolly, John Krasinski & Chris Martin
What’s one thing the stable couldn’t do without?
Our stock of Red Mills feed, much easier to groom horses that are shining from the inside out.
